Prebiotic Soda vs Probiotic vs Zevia: What’s in Each Can

Prebiotic sodas like Olipop, Poppi, Bloom Pop, and Pepsi Prebiotic Cola add fiber that feeds bacteria you already have. Probiotic sodas like Culture Pop add live bacteria. Zevia adds neither and has never claimed to. Same shelf, three completely different products doing three completely different jobs.

Which is exactly why people try one brand, hate it, and write off the entire aisle. It happens in my comments constantly. I did it too. For two years.

I Wrote Off the Whole Shelf Over One Brand

Back in 2023, my dietitian wanted me to swap my regular soda for one of these. So I bought a Poppi. It was gross. I tried a couple of different flavors, hoping one would land, and none did. I couldn’t do it. So I made a call that felt completely reasonable at the time: this whole gut health soda thing is a scam, moving on with my life.

Two years. I didn’t touch a single can from any brand.

What cracked it back open was a friend who kept casually drinking Zevia in her stories. She wasn’t selling it. She wasn’t making it a whole thing. She just liked it, and I trusted her, so eventually I tried one… and it was actually delicious.

Then Bloom Pop released a *LIMITED EDITION* Rocket Blast flavor.

Y’all. I am a bomb pop person. I had bomb pop nails for the 4th of July. So the second I found out that flavor existed I needed it, except my Walmart app SWORE it was in stock and my Walmart absolutely did not have it. Neither did the next one. A friend finally found four cans at hers and bought them for me. No aftertaste, nothing like what turned me off in 2023.

I’ve been a nurse since 2019, currently in the NICU, which means I spend a lot of my working life reading labels where the numbers actually matter. Somewhere in the Bloom Pop hunt, I got curious enough to start flipping these cans over and reading the back instead of the front. The back is a very different story than the front.

The bomb pop nails were not planned. They were already on my hands when I finally tracked this can down.

What Is Prebiotic Soda?

Prebiotic soda is carbonated flavored water with added fiber, usually inulin (from agave, chicory root, or Jerusalem artichoke) or cassava root fiber or soluble corn fiber. That fiber isn’t digested. It travels down to your large intestine, where the bacteria already living there can use it as food.

Fiber goes in; your existing bacteria eat.

Most of these cans also contain 2 to 5 grams of sugar instead of the roughly 39 grams in a regular cola, which is a real difference and honestly the more useful one for most people.

Prebiotic vs Probiotic Soda: What’s the Difference?

Prebiotic = food for the bacteria you already have. Fiber. Olipop, Poppi, Bloom Pop, Pepsi Prebiotic Cola, Coca-Cola’s Simply Pop.

Probiotic = live bacteria you’re adding in. Culture Pop is one of the very few actual probiotic sodas, and it names its strain on the can (Bacillus subtilis DE111), which is what a real probiotic product does.

Neither = Zevia. Carbonated water, stevia leaf extract, natural flavors. No fiber, no bacteria, no gut angle at all.

Most people use the word probiotic for all of them. Most of them ARE NOT PROBIOTIC. If the can talks about gut health and doesn’t name a bacterial strain, it’s a fiber product.

Olipop vs Poppi vs Bloom Pop vs Zevia vs Pepsi Prebiotic Cola

CanTypeFiber (12 oz)SugarWorth knowing
OlipopPrebiotic6g or 9g depending on the line2 to 5gTwo lines. The refrigerated one is 9g, the shelf stable one in the soda aisle is 6g
PoppiPrebiotic2g (newer cans list 3g)5gAgave inulin plus apple cider vinegar
Bloom PopPrebiotic1g3 to 4g20 calories, uses a branded fiber called PreticX
Pepsi Prebiotic ColaPrebiotic3g5g cane sugar30 calories, soluble corn fiber, no artificial sweeteners
Culture PopProbioticNone8 to 11gLive strain, no stevia, highest sugar of the group
ZeviaNeitherNone0gStevia sweetened, zero calories, usually the cheapest per can
Hand holding a Pepsi Prebiotic Cola Cherry Vanilla can showing 5g sugar and no artificial sweeteners on the label
5 grams of sugar and no artificial sweeteners, printed right on the top of the can where you can actually see it.

Look at that fiber column again. Bloom Pop has 1 gram. Olipop has 6 or 9 depending on which part of the store you grabbed it from. Those two are not competitors. They’re barely the same category.

How Much Prebiotic Fiber Do You Actually Need?

Nobody agrees.

Some research suggests around 5 grams of inulin a day is enough to shift gut bacteria measurably. Other research suggests you’d need well more than that, daily, for weeks, before anything happens. The number varies depending on which study you’re reading and who’s drinking it.

Olipop Cherry Cola can showing 5g sugar, 6g fiber, 40 calories and 50mg caffeine held in a car
Every number you need is stamped down the left side of this can. 5g sugar, 6g fiber, 40 calories, 50mg caffeine.

So one can of anything is not a gut protocol. The stuff that actually builds a gut is beans, vegetables, fruit, and oats. Boring, cheap, no marketing budget.

What I’ll say for these: swapping a soda with 39 grams of sugar and zero fiber for one with 3 grams of sugar and some fiber in it, even one gram, is a better swap than the one you were making. It just isn’t a supplement.

Is Zevia Healthier Than Diet Soda?

Not necessarily, and that’s fine.

Zevia Cherry Cola can labeled soda made better with zero sugar and zero cake colors held in a car
No fiber, no bacteria, no gut claims. Zevia has never pretended to be in the same category as others on the same shelf.

The bubbles. Carbonated water isn’t doing anything to your bones. That one’s a myth.

The clear color. Caramel color in dark colas contains a compound California flags under Prop 65, and both Coke and Pepsi reformulated back around 2012 to 2014 to get under the limit. So Zevia being dye free is a real difference. It’s just a much smaller one than it was a decade ago.

The sweetener. Stevia and aspartame both show up in gut-bacteria research, and the results conflict depending on which study you pull. Aspartame is the one the World Health Organization’s cancer arm classified as possibly carcinogenic in 2023. Stevia never has been. Slight edge, not a landslide.

The acid. Zevia uses citric acid. Diet Coke uses phosphoric acid. CITRIC ACID IS HARDER ON TOOTH ENAMEL because it pulls calcium directly off the tooth. Orange juice does the same thing.

So call Zevia what it is: a diet alternative. Not automatically healthier than a diet soda, just a different one.

It earns its spot with people who won’t touch the diet or zero version of their favorite soda because the aftertaste ruins it. That’s most brands for me. Zevia doesn’t do that to me, which is the only reason it’s in my fridge. If you’ve been drinking full sugar soda because diet tastes bad to you, that’s the swap worth trying.

Try it. You might like it. If you don’t, keep looking, because there is a LOT on the healthier soda shelf now.

Do Prebiotic Sodas Have Caffeine?

Some do, and it’s rarely on the front of the can.

  • Bloom Pop: caffeine free across the line. (Bloom’s Sparkling Energy is a different product with a lot of caffeine, and people mix those two up constantly.)
  • Pepsi Prebiotic Cola: 38mg, same as a regular Pepsi.
  • Poppi: most flavors are caffeine free, but the cola style ones have caffeine from green tea. Published amounts vary by source, so read the can.
  • Zevia: most flavors are caffeine free. The colas are not.
  • Olipop: depends on the flavor. The Cherry Cola can I have says 50MG RIGHT ON THE FRONT, which is more than a can of Pepsi. Cola and root beer style flavors are where it hides.

This is the detail that decides whether the can you grabbed on your way home is a good idea or a 2am problem.

If You’re on a GLP-1, Go Slow With the Fiber

GLP-1 medications slow how fast things move through your digestive system, and constipation is a known, dose related side effect, most common while you’re moving up in dose.

So the move a lot of people make, jumping straight to a 9 gram can because the internet said gut health, can land you in a worse spot than you started. Fiber without enough fluid backs things up harder.

Start low. Drink water with it. And how much fiber actually makes a difference seems to land differently for every person, which means the amount that works for someone else is not a target you need to hit.

How to Read a “Healthier” Soda Can in 30 Seconds

  1. Flip it over. The front is the ad. The back is the receipt.
  2. Find the Dietary Fiber line. 1 to 2 grams means a flavored soda with a little fiber in it. 6 to 9 grams is a different animal entirely. Same brand can be either. Olipop runs two lines, and the refrigerated cans have 9 grams while the shelf stable ones in the regular soda aisle have 6. Same flavor, same logo, different can.
  3. Look for a strain name. If it says probiotic but never names a bacterial strain, treat it as a fiber product.
  4. Check the sugar. 5 grams versus 39 is the actual headline, even when the can wants to talk about your microbiome.
  5. Check for caffeine. It’s almost never on the front.

Which Healthier Soda Should You Try First?

Depends on what you’re replacing.

Bloom Pop Shirley Temple caffeine free prebiotic soda can with 3g sugar held against a blanket
Shirley Temple was a recommendation from a nurse I trained. She was right.

Replacing a regular soda outright: Zevia. Zero sugar, no aftertaste for me, usually the cheapest of the bunch.

You want flavor and no caffeine: Bloom Pop. It’s the one I grab on my drive home when I want something that isn’t water, but I don’t want to add caffeine on top of everything else.

You actually want the cola taste: Pepsi Prebiotic Cola. It tastes like Pepsi because it is Pepsi, with 5 grams of sugar and 30 calories.

You want the most fiber in a can: Olipop, no contest. It was my least favorite in taste; the aftertaste got me, and the cherry cola tasted like cherry soda with no cola in it, but that’s a me problem, and the fiber math is the fiber math.

FAQ

Is prebiotic soda actually good for you?

It’s better than the soda it’s replacing, which is not the same as being good for you. The fiber amounts in most cans fall below what research uses to show a measurable effect, and the finished blends generally haven’t been tested as complete products. Treat it as a lower sugar drink, not a supplement.

Is Zevia a prebiotic soda?

No. Zevia contains no fiber and no live bacteria. It’s carbonated water, stevia leaf extract and natural flavors, which makes it a zero sugar diet alternative rather than a gut health product.

Does prebiotic soda help with bloating?

It can go either direction. Added fiber helps some people and produces gas and bloating in others, especially when the amount jumps suddenly. Adding it gradually and drinking more water alongside it makes a difference.

Which prebiotic soda has the most fiber?

Olipop, but which Olipop matters. The refrigerated line has 9 grams per 12 ounce can and the shelf stable line sold in the regular soda aisle has 6. Pepsi Prebiotic Cola has 3 grams, Poppi has 2 to 3 grams, and Bloom Pop has 1 gram.

Can you drink prebiotic soda every day?

Plenty of people do. The thing to watch is total sugar across the day and how your own gut responds, since fiber tolerance varies a lot person to person. It’s a drink, not a dose.

Protein After Weight Loss: What Actually Matters (and What’s Just Flavored Air)

After losing 94 pounds, I’ve learned a few things about protein.

Some protein is actually good.
Some is… questionable.
And some makes you pause mid-sip and think, wait. Was that even protein???

For a long time, I thought protein was mostly for gym bros trying to bulk up & flex in the mirror. You know the vibe. Giant tubs. Aggressive labels. Shakers that smell suspicious even after washing.

Turns out, protein is way more important than I ever realized, especially during weight loss.

Why protein matters way more than you think

Protein isn’t about getting huge. It’s about protecting what you already have.

When you’re losing weight, especially if you’re in a calorie deficit, your body doesn’t just burn fat. It also breaks down muscle if it doesn’t have enough protein to work with. And muscle matters more than people realize.

Muscle helps keep your metabolism humming. Less muscle can mean a slower metabolism, lower energy, and weight loss that feels harder and harder to maintain.

Protein helps prevent that. It gives your body the building blocks it needs to repair and rebuild instead of breaking things down.

It also keeps you full longer. Not “I just ate and I’m still thinking about snacks” full. Actual, satisfied, walk-away-from-the-pantry full.

And yes, it supports your metabolism even when you’re doing very important activities like sitting on the couch scrolling TikTok.

The nerdy nurse explanation you didn’t get in health class.

When calories drop, your body looks for fuel. Fat is one source. Muscle is another. If protein intake is too low, muscle loss happens faster. That muscle loss can slow your metabolism, which makes continued weight loss and maintenance harder over time.

Protein helps signal to your body, hey, we need this muscle. Please don’t toss it.

This is especially important if you’re losing weight with medication, lifestyle changes, or a combination of both. The goal isn’t just a smaller number on the scale. It’s feeling strong, energized, and able to keep the results long-term.

Not all protein is created equal

Just because something says “high protein” on the label does not mean it’s doing anything helpful for your body. Some options are high quality and easy to absorb. Others are basically flavored air with a side of digestive regret.

Over the past couple years, I’ve tried a lot. Powders. Ready-to-drink shakes. Bars. And a few things that can only be described as science experiments that should’ve stayed on the shelf.

Some tasted fine but didn’t keep me full.
Some had great macros but wrecked my stomach.
Some were so chalky they made me question my life choices.

Through trial, error, and a whole lot of label reading, I’ve figured out which ones are actually worth your time. Not perfect. Not magic. Just solid options that taste decent, digest well, and actually support a weight loss journey.

So what should you look for?

You don’t need perfection. You need consistency.

A protein source that:

  • Keeps you full longer
  • Doesn’t upset your stomach
  • Fits into your real life, not an influencer meal plan
  • Helps you hit your daily protein without feeling like a chore

Protein should make your life easier, not more complicated.

My real-life protein ratings

I’ve rounded up the proteins I actually use and enjoy. Not the ones that just photograph well. The ones I’ve gone back to again and again.

I rated my favorite proteins and shared the honest details

No hype. No fake enthusiasm. Just what worked for me after losing 94 pounds and trying… a lot.

Hitting reset without punishment

If the holidays left you feeling off track, tired, or frustrated with your body, this is your reminder that you don’t need extremes.

You don’t need to start over perfectly.
You don’t need to punish yourself.
You don’t need to survive on protein sludge and willpower.

Sometimes a reset just looks like fueling your body better and letting things feel easier again.

Protein is one of those quiet tools that makes everything else work better.

Your post-holiday reset doesn’t have to be dramatic.
It just has to be sustainable.

And feeling good again is a pretty solid place to start.
